Grace For Every Season

Has there been a time or season in your life when you had an abundant need for God’s grace? I certainly have. Looking back, I see the grace of my God that has led me to where I am today, and for that I am eternally thankful. From the deepest dark of depression that led to an attempted suicide on the brink of the day of my salvation, to learning how to walk and live rightly in the sight of God as a new Christian; every time I look back at my history, I see His grace woven into the very fabric of my life. A tapestry of His kindness.

The first verse that I ever put to memory serves as a great reminder of who I am, a sinner saved by His abundant grace. Ephesians 2:8, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.” The same God that inspired John Newton to write potentially the most famous and beloved hymn in Christendom is the same God who pours out wave upon wave of grace upon grace. The ebb and flow of this grace is not dependent on how mature we are as a believer or how long we have been walking with Jesus, but is solely based upon the fact that at His very heart, he is merciful and gracious, just as His word confirms.

As believers in Jesus, we have the glorious privilege to come in full assurance before our King’s throne of grace in times of need; to obtain that mercy and grace that we so desperately need. (Heb. 4:16) Just ponder and think on that for a minute’s time. How often have you and I humbly come to His throne, only to hear the whispers of our invisible enemy delivering piercing accusations and condemnation into our minds, convincing us that His throne is one of judgement, one of pain, one of punishment? This could not be further from the truth. For years I cowered in unbelief of this very thing, that my Father was not One who wanted me to taste of this grace, but gloried in punitive and demeaning punishment. Yes I believed He was righteous, all-knowing, fair and just in all His ways, but I did not truly believe that His throne was built upon this and that it flows from His heart to me. Unbelief in this area of His character is truly a damaging thing for your soul, so if you are struggling in believing His promises to you and of the fact that He has grace for you, ask Him to break you out of the cage of unbelief and doubt, to help you walk in freedom.

Not only is there grace for us all, but in Paul’s second epistle to the Corinthian church, we read that this grace abounds. II Corinthians 9:8, “And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.” That means that in every solitary season we walk through in life, His grace is there for us. This verse confirms that in order to abound in every good work that He has called us to, even within the local church, grace needs to abound in our lives. Thank our Maker today that this lies at the core of His being!

So, as the season and the leaves change this autumn, and you continue on this pilgrimage we call life, settle in your heart of hearts that God has abundant grace for you. His grace will meet you in every season of your life, just as it met those who have gone before us.

Were You to count my sinful ways

How could I come before Your throne

Yet full forgiveness meets my gaze

I stand redeemed by grace alone
